Kybella is the first FDA-cleared, non-surgical treatment for submental fat, or “double chin”.  It consists of deoxycholic acid which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. It is administered as a series of injections over a period of weeks to months into the fat underneath the chin to help contour and improve the appearance of fullness. When injected into the subcutaneous fat, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. After the desired correction is achieved, retreatment with Kybella is not expected.

What is submental fat or fullness?

Submental fullness, sometimes referred to as a “double chin”, is a common under-treated facial aesthetic condition that can impact a broad range of adults. This is not only limited to those who are overweight. This condition can impact men or women of average weight and can be caused by aging, genetics and weight gain. It is often resistant to diet and exercise alone. It can add age and heaviness to an otherwise balanced face.

When will results from Kybella be seen?

Fat and fullness reduction under the chin occurs gradually and improves over a period of weeks to months.

Will my skin sag or appear loose after treatment?

No.  As demonstrated in the clinical studies submitted to the FDA, as the fat reduction occurs in the chin and neck area, the skin retracts or tightens to provide a more defined chin and jawline.

Are the effects permanent?

With maintenance of your body weight, the elimination of fat cells related to your Kybella treatment should be permanent.  However, weight changes due to diet and exercise habits could increase the size of remaining fat cells.  Therefore, large weight gain could result in the recurrence of unwanted fat in previously Kybella treated areas.

What are the possible side effects and downtime following Kybella treatment?

The side effects following Kybella are mild and limited in nature to the area of injection.  The sites of injection may experience temporary redness, burning, bruising, firmness, or pain following Kybella treatment. You can expect to have swelling under the chin for a few days after your treatment.

How long does the procedure take and will it hurt?

The procedure involves a series of injections using the tiniest needle possible. Precooling of the area helps minimize any discomfort. Anesthesia is not necessary as the injections are quick and relatively painless. The entire procedure takes 15-20 minutes. Most of the appointment time is spent outlining the area for treatment as only the fat immediately underneath the chin can be treated.

Can any other areas of fat be treated?

As of now, Kybella is only used to treat submittal fullness. The safe and effective use of Kybella for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region has not been established and is not recommended.

Can I use Kybella with other procedures?

Of course! Please speak with one of our physicians or our cosmetic coordinator about coordinating other procedures to help achieve a well defined and pleasing jawline and neck. Other neck rejuvenating procedures include Botox to smooth out neck bands and Exilis Protege Elite to lift and continue to contour the jawline and neck.
