Restylane®, Restylane Silk® and Perlane®
Restylane® and its more robust version, Perlane®, are both hyaluronic acid gel fillers used to give volume to the face or smooth out folds and wrinkles similar to Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus®. Both are also now available pre-mixed with the anesthetic lidocaine to increase your comfort during an injection session. Restylane® has smaller individual gel size particles compared to Perlane®. Restylane® and Perlane® have slightly different chemical properties than Juvederm® making their consistency firmer. Regardless, they are used in the same manner and in the same areas of the face for the same correction. Your physician will have a preference of which filler she likes to use in a certain area of your face.
Restylane Silk® is the newest hyaluronic acid filler to join the Restylane family of products. It was FDA-approved for use in the U.S. Market in June 2014. It consists of a smooth silky formulation of hyaluronic gel particles, even smaller than Restylane®. It was FDA-approved for use in the United States in June 2014 for improvement of fine lines around the mouth and correction of volume loss within the lips.
How long does Restylane® and Perlane® last?
Similar to Juvederm®, these fillers last 6-12 months, sometimes longer, and undergo isovolumic degradation to continually correct folds and wrinkles as the filler disappears.
How long does Restylane Silk last?
According to clinical trials the improvement from Restylane Silk may last approximately 6-12 months, although individual results vary.
Where can Restylane® and Perlane® be used?
These hyaluronic acid fillers are FDA-approved for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds including the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, vertical lip lines, and corners of the mouth. Restylane® received FDA-approval for lip augmentation in 2011. We can use Restylane® and Perlane® individually or together or with a Juvederm product to achieve a full face correction.
What is the safety profile and side effects of the Restylane® , Restylane Silk®, and Perlane®?
Like Juvederm, there is no need for an allergy test. Mild swelling and bruising are the most likely side effects following injection. Any uncommon adverse events, such as persistent bumps, can be easily treated with a small shot of an enzyme, hyaluronidase, that degrades the filler.
Where can Restylane Silk be injected?
Restylane Silk is FDA-approved for the correction of fine lines around the mouth, such as “smokers lines” or “lipstick lines.” It is also indicated for injection directly into the lip for lip enhancement. Your doctor may recommend using this product off label for other fine lines around the face.
Are results from Restylane, Perlane, and Restylane Silk immediate?
Yes, these HA products work immediately! You may have temporary swelling that resolves after a few days.
How does Restylane Silk differ from other hyaluronic acid products like Restylane, Juvederm, or Belotero?
The Restylane family of products, Perlane, Restylane, and now Restylane Silk are all hyaluronic acid gel products composed of gel particles. The different products of this family are distinguished by their particle size, imparting different filling uses for each product.
Restylane Silk differs from other products in the Restylane family by its PARTICLE SIZE. Perlane has larger particles that make it ideal for lifting tissues and creating deep volume in the face. Restylane has a mid range particle size that makes it versatile as a filler from enhancing lip size to filling in facial volume loss. Restylane Silk has the smallest particle size, allowing it to smooth fine wrinkles such as perioral rhytids (lipstick lines) or for lip augmentation.
Juvederm Ultra and the family of Allergan products (Voluma, Juvederma Ultra Plus) are cohesive gels, meaning they are not made of particles. They provide a smooth result and attract water to the area of placement.
Restylane Silk can be categorized as a fine line filler, somewhat similar to Belotero Balance. Belotero Balance is a cohesive gel, not a particle, and has a low concentration. Belotero may or may not have a shorter duration compared to Restylane Silk.
