Lasers are great way  for permanently removing unwanted hair anywhere on the body. The laser emits a beam of energy that passes through the skin into the bulb of the hair follicle where it is absorbed and transformed into heat which destroys the hair follicle and leaves the surrounding skin intact. By delivering light energy to many hair follicles simultaneously, our laser hair removal system can quickly and effectively treat large areas.

Our office uses the Gentle Max Pro system to remove hair on the face, neck, legs, arms, underarms, chest, back, and the bikini line. This laser is the gold standard for hair removal in both light and dark skin types. As the name suggests, it is very gentle and has no downtime! A series of treatments spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart are necessary for effective treatment. The number of treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on hair thickness, the area treated, and your hair’s growth cycle. Not all hairs actively grow at the same time so multiple treatments are necessary to destroy most of the hair follicles in a given area. Different areas of the body require more or less treatments. Darker coarser hairs (like the chin and bikini area) respond more quickly than fine lighter hairs (like the upper lip).

In most cases, laser hair removal can permanently reduce the amount of hair in treated areas. However, it cannot prevent new hairs from growing. Therefore, touch ups may be needed periodically.

Are there any side effects from the Gentlelase?

There may be minimal pain and discomfort during treatment. Some areas of the body, such as the upper lip and bikini area, can be more sensitive than others. Topical anesthetics and precooling with icepacks can help decrease any discomfort. Post treatment redness and swelling may occur and may last minutes to several hours. Postcooling ice packs and soothing emollients can help relieve this faster. It is important to come to your treatment with absolutely no tan. Any tan in the skin can be a target for the laser potentially causing a minor burn or blister or can result in post procedural hyper or hypo pigmentation (brown or white spots).

Does the laser work on white or blond hair?

No, the laser can only target hair with dark pigment. Lighter brown hairs will respond to the laser but may require more treatment sessions. Dark thicker hairs will respond the fastest.

Can the laser be used on dark skin?

The Gentle Max Pro has 2 settings- one for lighter skin types and one for darker skin types. Darker skin is typically treated with the YAG program which sends the laser deeper in the skin to avoid any pigment on the surface of the skin. It is very effective and safe to use on dark skin with dark hair.

Will the laser help razor bumps?

Yes! This laser will remove the hair follicle causing the razor bumps so they will not recur. It even works great for pseudofolliculits barbae on the neck and face. This is a condition where many ingrown hairs cause inflammation, skin bumps, hyperpigmentation of the skin and even scars.

How do I prepare for my laser session?

Please shave the hairs in the area you would like treated. This allows the laser to target the hair bulb and not the hair growing out of the skin. Do not pluck, tweeze, wax, thread or use a chemical hair remover prior to treatment as this may remove the hair bulb which is the target of the treatment. Please do not come in with a real or fake tan as your session may have to be deferred until the tan fades.
