Acne affects approximately two-thirds of individuals. It is most common in teenagers, but can affect all ages. Acne most commonly occurs on the face but may also erupt on the chest, back, neck and shoulders. Some acne cases can be severe and lead to scarring and/or discoloration. Severe facial acne can contribute to self-consciousness, decreases in self esteem, anxiety, poor body image, and in extreme cases social ostracism and depression.

Acne is related to changes of the pilosebaceous unit—the hair follicle and oil gland. The cause of acne is multifactorial. Causative factors include:

  • Increases in oil production
  • Inflammation
  • Plugging of the hair follicle by sticky shedding skin cells
  • Bacteria in the hair follicle (Proprionibacterium)
  • Hormones
