Photodynamic therapy is medically indicated for “field” treatment of multiple actinic keratoses (AKs) also known as “sun spots” that most often appear on areas exposed to UV light, such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, hands and arms.
In this two-step treatment, a topical solution called Levulan® is applied to the skin and allowed to “incubate” for a given amount of time determined by your physician. This solution makes the treated area sensitive to a particular wavelength of light. The BLU-U® device is then used to treat the affected areas.
Usually one to three treatments are administered over the course of six-twelve months. In most cases, BLU-U® Light therapy can destroy up to 90% of actinic keratoses. However, it cannot prevent new ones from forming, and therefore additional treatments with other modalities may be needed as well.
